WordPress, Blogger, Movable Type, Oh my! There are so many blogging platforms out there it’s hard to know where to start. My completely unbiased review of the top three will hopefully help you out on your quest to be the next Perez.

a
Blogs range from parks reviews to exploiting the clothing challenged people of Wal-Mart and tend to stem from a passion that people decide to share. I am not sure how ones passion becomes voyeuristically stalking peoples terrible clothing choices but who am I to judge. Needless to say the idea of the blog born out of an interest is key to making your blog great. So if you are into Ponies, Unicorns or want to run a commentary on the latest Prada bags read on and I can give a brief overview of the top 3 blogging platforms, Blogger, Wordpress and Movable Type.

Wordpress – All that and a bag of chips.

A very smart person once said “ Keep it simple stupid” and I think that’s theme the makers of WordPress have laid their foundation on. If you are comfortable using webmail you can be an expert WordPress publisher in no time at all.

Aside from ease of use Wordpress also has the largest community of developers and theme designers with tons free (yes I said free) themes and plugins. You can find small applications with one click installations that immediately allow your site do everything from accept Paypal payments to showcasing beautiful photo galleries with light box effects all without any knowledge of programming.

I can go on and on but my coffee is getting cold so here are the quick benefits:

You host it on your own server so there is no forced advertising and you can completely customize it.

Easy to add new pages and upload images.

Tons of Free and Premium Themes

Did I mention how easy it is to use?

Blogger

Blogger is the second most popular blogging software out there. There are 2 main reasons for its popularity. First is been around longer then just about any other blogging platform, and 2 it’s easy to use. The downfall to Blogger is a small display bar at the top of the page with the Blogger logo and links to other blogs plus it’s a bit clunky and is sneered at by the power bloggers out there. With that said it is reliable and easy to use for the average Joe who just wants an outlet to express the writer within.

Here are my top 3 benefits.

It’s Free!

You don’t need to know how to install any software

Get stumbled upon traffic from other blogs.

Movable Type:

Ok after getting this far into the article I realize that I could never be unbiased and really think I should just be blunt, so her it is. Movable Type kinda sucks. I know I used it, I had a few blogs running on it but in the end I moved back to my BFF WordPress. Why do you ask? Because hands down it is the best, the most robust the easiest to use. Don’t get caught up on the other options out there. Go for the best and save your self the time of trying out other systems only to come back to word press.

I have no idea if this was useful, I was hoping I could be less biased but I feel like a cheater trying to sell anything but the best. If you want to take the leap and become the next top blogger take a look at WordPress.org to learn more.

As always I my offer a WorPress setup package to help you get up and running with out having to figure it out yourself. To learn more click here.

All the BANG without the Bucks

One of the first things you need once you decide to get your business or blog online is to find a web host. It is basically a rental of space on a server to house your data and images. That is where Ipage.com comes in. They offer 24/7 tech support, unlimited bandwidth, online shopping, full stats package all with the click of a few buttons all for $3.50 a month. This is by far the most inexpensive robust host I have found. Since finding Ipage I ended up switching this blog over and recommend to any of my new clients.

Top 5 benefits.

$50 credit for Google Ad Words

Offer FREE domain for life

Live chat tech support ( I have used this and always connect within a min. or so)

Unlimited storage and bandwidth

Secured Web host with SiteLock Security

A Green Host

If you are on the fence between Ipage.com and another host maybe the fact that all their offices and data centers are all 100% powered by wind energy. Meaning you can be proud that the machines hosting your site and e-mails are fully eco-friendly.

Heard enough?

Extensions

WordPress is fundamentally a blogging platform. There are a few core concepts in WordPress, they are:

Posts

A Post is a time stamped piece of content. Posts are what a blog is made of and appear on the homepage in sequential order. They can also be categorized and tagged, have an author, a date and comments attached. Posts are the building block of WordPress.

Pages

WordPress Pages are for high level content that is more permanent and static. Things like about and contact pages are usually made with a Page. Pages don’t have a timestamp and appear separate from Posts. An example would be an “About Us” or a “Contact Us” page.

Comments

Comments are small messages left on a blog by users or the public. Comments are comprised of a name, email address, URL and comment message. Comments have an approval system that by default lets through comments from any registered user and from anyone who has previously had a comment approved. First time commenters will have their comments held for approval. You will need to log in and check through the list to sort the spam from the legitimate

A very well-known plugin that will make your comment approval life much easier is Akismet. Akismet is made by Automattic and is a very good spam filter. WordPress comes installed with Akismet by default, although you need to get a (free) key from WordPress.com.

WP-Admin

When you install WordPress there is the front-end of the site which everyone sees and an admin area for managing and updating the site called WP-Admin, or sometimes referred to as the Dashboard, or the admin area. If you have a blog at www.example.com, then the admin will be at www.example.com/wp-admin.

Users

A WordPress install can have multiple registered users who each have different roles. The first user will always be the admin account having the role of Administrator. Other possible roles are: User, Contributor, Author, Editor, Administrator. Depending on a user’s role, they will be able to do different things like post, edit, and approve comments.

Users can be created in WP-Admin or if you make it possible, from the front end. So for example you could choose to make a blog such that anyone wishing to comment would need to register. You might also then hire an author or two and create user accounts for them set to Author. Finally you might hire a WordPress developer to fix a bug and give them Administrator access.

Just a week and a half ago WordPress for the iPhone was announced with a pretty killer screencast detailing what you could do with it. Tuesday morning it finally showed up on the app store, and I’ve had ample time to play with it. The good news is that it’s very enjoyable to use and quite capable for creating posts on the go.

The key benefit to using this app is writing and publishing quick posts on the go. What we found after using it, though, is that it offers up far more to the discerning user who wants to use it as a very powerful publishing tool. You can upload photos either from your existing library or snap a quick shot with your phone’s camera. I can see this leading to many food-related photo blogs. Also nice is that whatever you write can be saved on your phone, so you can work on dozens of posts at once and only publish when you want. There’s also a great preview function that will show you what your post will look like without kicking you off to Safari.

I successfully connected two Wordpress.com hosted blogs to the app in just a minute or two, although I ran into problems connecting my personal hosted blog that uses the software install from WordPress.org. It’s worth noting you’ll need version 2.5.1 or higher to hook it up to a hosted blog, although updating to the recently released 2.6 is definitely worth it for all those extra publishing goodies.

Unfortunately there are some serious shortcomings to the iPhone that bring the app down a notch. If you’re used to adding links to your posts there’s not a lot you can do without copy and paste. HTML code is fully supported, so as long as you’re good with your href tagging (which is brutal on the iPhone’s built-in keyboard) you’ll be able to add links from memory just fine. Another quibble of mine is that drafts created on your computer won’t show up in your post queue on the iPhone app, meaning you won’t be able to start a post on your computer and finish it on the road. Ideally, future revisions will include better shortcuts for adding links and some support for fetching drafts from the cloud.

Hardcore users with a lot of readers will also be pining for some sort of comment management feature in future revisions. As it stands, you’ll have to log in to your WordPress dashboard from Safari and administrate them from there, which isn’t terrible, but it would be far more enjoyable to write and manage in one place.

All in all, it’s off to a great start, and compared to competitor TypePad, which had its app available at the launch of the app store, WordPress is just as full featured and opens up mobile blogging to the millions of WordPress.com and WordPress.org users.

ClassiPress is the first and only premium classified ads WordPress theme. They call themselves the Craigslist of WordPress and rightfully so. This is such a great idea if you think about it. Instead of having to buy a separate classified ads script and install, configure and get used to their interface, you can just purchase this WordPress theme and you are good to go!

It comes packed with features such as PayPal integration, auto expire ads, image upload, multi-currency support, seller contact form, etc. No plugins required! You even get an easy to use dedicated management page where you can easily configure everything.

The best feature is the PayPal integration which allows you to basically setup your own classified ads website and start charging people to post things. So if you’ve got a niche site (or any site for that matter), then this is perfect for you.

This theme is WP 2.7+ compatible, widget ready, unlimited support, and very reasonably priced for such an innovative idea.
